Canadian Jiu-Jitsu Union Black Belt College

Dec. 20, 2011

Purpose:

The Black Belt College was estabilished by Professor Georges Sylvain, 10th Degree Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt and the founder of the Can-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu System, the Canadian System of Jiu-Jitsu, in order to provide black belt instructors an opportunity to advance in their martial arts qualifications and rank and become better teachers. The Black Belt College's "Teacher's Certification Program" offers Black Belt holders an incentive to become better educated in the Art of Jiu-Jitsu as well as how to teach Jiu-Jitsu.

I must point out that there are many Black Belts individuals who own and operate their own Dojos but have no avenue in order to persue their advancement in their Black Belt qualifications and Dan ranking. Each and every individual situation has a justifiable explanation.

The Black Belt classes in Ottawa are conducted five times a year on the third Sundays of September, November January, March and May. The classes are four hours in duration from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Black Belt classes are also held in various provinces across Canada by Steve Hiscoe Shihan and myself.

Physical Skills You'll Learn

As a participant in these Black Belt Classes you'll learn valuable insight and methods about teaching a group of martial art students.

You learn about the concepts of the 6 basic elements of Jiu-Jitsu:

  1. Striking
  2. Blocking
  3. Throwing
  4. Joint locking
  5. Ground defense
  6. Neck restraints.

You'll also learn:

  • How to conduct safe and proper warm up exercises including high stress sparring drills and training methods.
  • How to use weapons of opportunity
  • How to defend agains weapons
  • How to use the Persuader Key Holder Self-Defense System
  • How to use and apply Police Pressure Points.
  • Foundations of the Simple Hold Escape System.
  • And about many more related topics.

Teaching Skills You'll Learn

You'll receive training in both gross and fine motor skill techniques. You'll learn how to teach various techniques with the understanding of why the techniques work and why they don't.

You also get the opportunity to listen to explanation dialoque and how to break down the techniques so you'll have a much better understanding of the self defense/protection methods taught in the Can-Ryu curriculum. In turn, you can use this new information to better teach within your own Dojo and classroom using the "3- Minute Rule."

You'll learn how to prepare and use lesson plans, and how to design and follow your own training program(s) to ensure all of your students are receiving the necessary education for achieving their Kyu rank levels and instruction to achieve Black Belt ranks.

You'll have plenty of opportunities to practice giving verbal presentations. This is to prepare you to be able to speak confidently and think on your feet in front of a group of people. You'll participate in practical presentations by selecting a random technique and present a practical teaching scenario in front of the other black belt participants in the class.

Black Belt College Teacher's Certification

Once you have attended a series of Black Belt classes, you are offered the opportunity to write examinations to achieve Levels 1, 2 and 3 in the Teacher's Certification Program and achieve a Canadian Jiu-jitsu Union Black Belt College Teacher's License.

Professor Georges Sylvain was adamant that the Black Belt College program be maintained in the highest quality standards and be made available for the training, teaching and education of martial arts instructors so they would be able to earn a teacher's license through the Black Belt College program and become qualified teachers.

I am very pleased to confirm that Professor Sylvain's objective has been rigidly maintained and there have been numberous Black Belt holders and Dojo owners from across Canada who have been able to benefit and progress in their martial arts education through the Black Belt College's Teacher's Certification Program.

This program is also available through Home Study Courses to those individuals who may not be able to attend classes because of the distance in where they reside.

If you are a Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt holder and/or Jiu-Jitsu Dojo owner and find yourself in a situation where you have no place to turn to for obtaining advanced martial arts education and promotion, please contact me
